Evander Kane praises Elias Pettersson following first informal skate together

Earlier this week, several members of the Vancouver Canucks returned to the city and began informal skates, which are expected to continue up until the official start of training camp on September 18th.

These informal skates gives the players an additional opportunity to build chemistry, something that will benefit Evander Kane in the long run as a new addition to the Canucks roster.

When speaking with reporters after Wednesday’s skate, Kane was full of praise for Elias Pettersson, telling Steve Ewen of The Province that he’s going to do whatever it takes to get open and create space for him, as the Swedish forward is hoping for a big bounce back this season and will need the help of his linemates to accomplish that.”He’s a guy who obviously skates really well. He’s able to handle the puck through the neutral zone. He has great speed.” Kane said.

He added, “I’ve played with a couple of guys like that in my career and I think It’s imperative to help them create space through the neutral zone off the rush and, at the same time, let their attributes make yours even better. Getting open, finding the right spot to be to get the puck, reading off of them.”

Kane also opened up about the possibility of playing alongside Elias Pettersson this season, saying that he wants to be with “the best players” as much as he possibly can and believes that they can use their respective skill sets to build chemistry now and in training camp so that they’re ready to go by the time opening night rolls around in early October.

“You obviously want to play with the best players available as much as possible. I anticipate that’s probably going to happen at some point. It will be about using our skill sets to our advantage to build as much chemistry and as much success as possible.” Kane said.

It’s still a bit early to say who will be on Elias Pettersson’s left side when the puck drops on the 2025-26 season for the Canucks on October 9th, but it’s safe to say that Adam Foote will give both Jake DeBrusk and Evander Kane an opportunity in that role throughout training camp to see who would be the better fit.
