A cyclist is dead after a fatal crash with a vehicle in East Gwillimbury, about 10 kilometres north of Aurora, where police say the victim may have been run over more than once.
York Regional Police were called to the scene at Highway 11 and Morning Sideroad early Sunday morning at 12:50 a.m.Â
Police said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. They are still working to identify the cyclist.Â
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, said Staff Sgt. Mike McKeraghan with York police.Â
He said the driver witnessed one other vehicle run over the cyclist after the crash, and that investigators believe this vehicle may have thought they were driving over an animal.Â
McKeraghan says police are urging any drivers who were in the area and thought they may have driven over roadkill to contact them.Â
He says this driver is “not necessarily in any trouble,” but that investigators are looking for information to put together a sequence of events.
Police are also looking for any dashcam footage or witnesses to come forward.
