Toraya Reid, the older sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid, was shot and killed on Saturday outside of an apartment complex in New Jersey, authorities said.

Shaquille Green, a 29-year-old man from Jackson Township, N.J., has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with Toraya Reid’s death, according to a statement from Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.

Toraya Reid, 28, and Green had been in “a dating relationship,” Billhimer said. When officers arrived after receiving a 911 call reporting shots fired, they saw Green running away from the scene, Billhimer said.

Toraya was the oldest of three Reid children, including Naz and younger sister Jakahya.

“My older sister is super protective,” Naz once told Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine about Toraya. “She treats us like she’s our parent.”

Naz Reid is a beloved figure in Minnesota for his play on the court and his outreach to those in need off of it. He entered the NBA as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and quickly built himself into a vital cog in the Timberwolves’ young core. He was named Sixth Man of the Year in 2024 and averaged 14.2 points and 6.0 rebounds last season, when the Wolves advanced to their second straight Western Conference finals.

He signed a five-year, $125 million contract this summer to remain in Minnesota.
