Prime Minister Mark Carney in St. John’s (C-PAC)
Prime Minister Mark Carney says discussions are still underway regarding an assistance package for people who lost their homes in recent wildfires in the province.
Carney says they’re currently working through the compensation question in conversation with Premier John Hogan and others.
In Conception Bay North alone, many families are displaced with hundreds of homes destroyed and many more buildings gone.
The Prime Minister did acknowledge that there needs to be greater investment in fire prevention and firefighting equipment Canada-wide.
“We’re making huge investments in our satellite detection which is helping us to move quickly, and our capacity to move quickly in any part of this country.” He indicated more information on water bomber capacity and assistance for fire fighters and first responders is expected in the coming weeks.”
Carney was in St. John’s today to announce $80 million dollars in funding for small to medium-sized business in Atlantic Canada to help mitigate any potential impact from U.S. tariffs. The funding will be administered through ACOA.
