Two rural communities on Vancouver Island will soon have better access to high-speed internet.

Two rural communities on northern Vancouver Island will soon have better access to high-speed internet, as part of an announcement by the provincial government to enhance connectivity to remote areas.

Oclucje of Nuchatlaht First Nation will be one of the 11 projects the government will focus on improving the infrastructure through the Ministry of Citizens’ Services. A total of 13 households will be served with the new connected service, with a total project funding as much as $105,299.

Quatsino on northwestern Vancouver Island will have 90 households served, with a total project funding of as much as $864,730.

CityWest, in partnership with Strathcona Regional District, is also building a new fibre-transport link between Campbell River and Gold River. This project will enhance regional transport capacity, including capacity for the Connected Coast Network, which spans approximately 2,810 kms of fibre and landing sites on beaches along coastal B.C., providing improved connectivity for several coastal communities.

“We’re helping people across the province to access employment, health care, education and training by partnering with service providers to bring fibre-to-home connectivity to rural, remote and Indigenous communities,” said Minister of Citizens’ Services Diana Gibson.

Since 2017, the province has invested $584 million to expand connectivity in British Columbia.
