The Lady Matadors coasted past the Roughriders 6-0, allowing no shots on goal to remain undefeated

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Arizona Western College Women’s Soccer team continued its dominant start to the season, shutting out Yavapai College 6-0 for their conference opener at Matador Soccer Field on Tuesday night.

The Matadors, now 4-0 on the season, controlled possession throughout the majority of the game and did not allow a single shot on goal from the Roughriders.

Former Central High standout Arianna Peraza made her mark on both ends of the field. Early in the second half, she delivered a clean slide tackle to stop a Yavapai attack. Moments later, she found the back of the net with a strike tucked into the bottom right corner, extending AWC’s lead to four.

Arizona Western kept the pressure on, scoring moments later, when Valeria Ramon scored off a cross from Kiana Knudson.

Later in the half, Asa Yamazaki would score her second goal of the game, and the final goal of the Matadors dominant route.

Linka Ono and Kiana Knudson would round out the rest of the box score adding goals as well.

Head coach Victor Verdugo praised his team’s effort after the match, claiming their first couple of games helped them prepare for this conference opener.

“I think it goes back to how we started off the year against a couple of D1 opponents,” Verdugo says. “If we could possess against them, once we get into conference play, the confidence is there to continue with that identity.”

The Matadors will look to keep their perfect record intact as conference play rolls on this Saturday against Eastern Arizona College at 4:30 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
