The New York Yankees’ bullpen gave up 10 runs in their Tuesday loss to the Detroit Tigers.

With the postseason so close, the bullpen needs to figure things out. There have been consistency concerns all season. Fernando Cruz allowed five earned runs and Jack Leiter Jr. allowed four more as the bullpen took away any chance for the Yankees to win on Tuesday.

Despite a nine-run inning that essentially ended any chance of the Yankees winning, Aaron Boone expressed confidence in his bullpen.

“Still good,” Boone told NJ.com’s Max Goodman on the state of his bullpen.

Cruz had his worst outing of the year, but the overall inconsistencies with the bullpen are concerning. The Yankees are ranked 22nd in bullpen ERA this season and their bullpen has given up 66 home runs. However, Boone is confident in his guys.

“Cruzer has been great,” Boone said, per Goodman. “It happens. I feel like Weave is in a good place. And Devin is throwing the ball well. And Bednar. And Timmy hasn’t pitched in a while, just some matchup things, but obviously we have a ton of confidence in him when things are right. And I think Leiter, we need to get him more in the mix here in some of these situations.

“So, we have the guys down there to get it done. We just gotta sync it up. Like, tonight’s a tough night, but it doesn’t change a lot of the good things that have happened in some of these games we’ve been able to close out.”

The Yankees’ bullpen will need to be better when October starts. Among teams seemingly destined for October, the Yankees’ bullpen has been one of the worst over the course of the season.
