After Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, some fans were a little nervous that perhaps Doncic wouldn’t commit to staying with his new team long term. He had an opt-out clause in his contract for the summer of 2027, and it was known that the franchise needed to get him signed to some sort of extension as soon as possible.
It did exactly that on Aug. 2, the first day he was eligible for such an extension. Now, it is widely assumed that Doncic, who is 26 years of age, will be a Laker for life.

More proof that Doncic is going to be with the organization for a good period of time came with the news that he had bought a house in Manhattan Beach. The property he purchased reportedly used to belong to tennis great Maria Sharapova.
“Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers in late August paid $25 million for the Manhattan Beach home of retired five-time Grand Slam singles champion Maria Sharapova,” wrote Sandra Barrera of The Southern California News Group.
“The modern three-story house features five bedrooms, a two-lane bowling alley and a great room that opens to the pool’s edge.
“Doncic, the 26-year-old Slovenian basketball player who signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Lakers in August, acquired the property through his business manager, Lara Beth Seager, according to records viewed at PropertyShark.com and confirmed by the Southern California News Group.”
Plenty of Lakers players, both past and present, have lived either on the Westside or the South Bay sections of the greater Los Angeles area. Doncic can now truly get settled in and become a permanent member of the community while he looks to bring the Lakers their 17th NBA championship.
The extension he signed this summer is for three years and $165 million. He can opt out of it in 2028, at which point he would be eligible for a supermax deal that could be worth as much as $417 million over five years.
