In August 2021, researchers in Bolivia stumbled upon an extraordinary moment that would captivate animal lovers and scientists alike. A group of Amazon river dolphins, or botos, was spotted interacting with a massive anaconda in the wild. The researchers described what they saw in the journal Ecology last month.
This surreal encounter, near the Tijamuchi River, offered a rare glimpse into the playful—and sometimes puzzling—behaviors of these enigmatic creatures. While such observations are a gift to biologists, they also leave us wondering: what was really going on beneath the water’s surface?
A Surprising Discovery in the Amazon
The Amazon river dolphins are not easy to spot. These elusive mammals are typically shy, spending most of their time submerged in the murky waters of the Amazon basin. So when researchers noticed unusual behavior—a group of dolphins surfacing for extended periods—it immediately caught their attention. What they didn’t expect, however, was the reason for their prolonged appearances: the dolphins weren’t just coming up for air, they were playing with a giant anaconda.
The snake, identified as Eunectes beniensis, the Bolivian variant of the anaconda species, seemed to be an object of curiosity and amusement for the dolphins. Far from behaving aggressively or predatory, the dolphins appeared to engage with the snake in a playful manner, challenging our preconceived notions about their behavior in the wild.
Dolphins at Play
This unusual interaction was more than just a fleeting moment of interest—it was an act of play. As the dolphins swam in synchrony, they were observed holding the anaconda in their mouths, seemingly treating it like a toy. It was a surprising sight for the researchers, who confirmed that the dolphins weren’t hunting or attempting to harm the snake. Instead, they were engaging in an activity that researchers would later describe as “playful behavior.“
“At first, we couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” said Steffen Reichle, a biologist from the Noel Kempff Mercado Museum of Natural History, who was part of the research team. “It became clear that they were playing with the snake, not trying to eat it.”

This discovery, is remarkable not only for its rarity, but also for what it reveals about the social nature of these river dolphins. Known for their intelligence and complex behaviors, dolphins have long been understood to engage with objects and even other animals in playful ways. But an interaction with a massive snake is a first for researchers in this region.
Theories Behind the Behavior
While the dolphins’ playful behavior was clear, the reasons behind this interaction remain speculative. Some researchers believe that the adult dolphins were showing younger members of their group how to interact with their environment. This educational play could serve as a method of teaching the younger dolphins survival skills in a safe, controlled manner.
There is also a more provocative theory that some researchers have suggested: the behavior may have had a sexual undertone. Observers noted that some male dolphins seemed excited during the interaction, a common trait in certain types of object play among dolphins. While this remains purely speculative, it raises intriguing questions about the social dynamics of these creatures.
As for the anaconda, it seems to have been caught in an unfortunate situation. The massive snake, typically capable of holding its breath for long periods, appeared to be stuck in a vulnerable position. It didn’t move for the duration of the interaction, and researchers suggested that the prolonged exposure to the surface may have contributed to its demise.
