FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — After a week that saw two shutout victories and nine combined goals, Binck-Jan Bakker and Robin Ruigendijk, swept the weekly athlete of the week honors from the MIAA conference office.
For both Bakker and Ruigendijk, the recognition marks the first weekly award of their respective careers.
Bakker logged 159 minutes on Albion’s backline in wins against Cleary University (2-0) and Franklin College (7-0). The sophomore managed the center of Albion’s defense as the Brits extended their shutout streak to three consecutive games. The Rotterdam, Netherlands, native’s steady presence has Albion ranked atop the MIAA in goals-against average (0.25).
While Bakker made his presence felt in Albion’s defensive third, Ruigendijk was a force to be reckoned with at the opposite end of the field. The first-year talent bagged three goals and tallied one assist to keep Albion’s undefeated start to the season rolling. Ruigendijk was involved in both goals in Albion’s 2-0 win over Cleary, scoring the opener before adding an assist on Xavier Yuille‘s marker. Against Franklin, the Niewerkerk aan den Ijssel, Netherlands, product added a pair of goals in the midst of the Britons barrage against the Grizzlies.
Bakker and Ruigendijk lead the Britons back into action on Wednesday, September 17, when they travel to Adrian, Michigan, for a matchup against Siena Heights University at 7 pm.
