After his late heroics in Saturday’s win over the Edmonton Elks, Toronto Argonauts quarterback Jarret Doege is expected to get the start under centre in place of the injured Nick Arbuckle against the Montreal Alouettes in Week 16, according to TSN’s Dave Naylor.

Arbuckle was not seen at practice Tuesday after sustaining a calf injury in the late stages of the win over Edmonton, with Naylor adding that the 2024 Grey Cup MVP is expected to be sidelined for an additional 2-4 weeks.

Chad Kelly, who has still yet to make his season debut, was not seen in a jersey for Tuesday’s session, and appears to be out for at least another week while working his way back from a fractured tibia and fibula suffered in last year’s Eastern Final.

No Nick Arbuckle at @TorontoArgos practice Tuesday. Hearing he has a calf strain and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. Chad Kelly is present but not in a jersey. Expect Jarret Doege to start versus @MTLAlouettes on Friday. #CFL #Argos

Doege engineered a drive a game-winning drive in his first taste of game action for the Argonauts, completing three-of-six passes for 35 yards to get within range for an eventual game-winning field goal from Lirim Hajrullahu.

“It’s my third year in the CFL so I feel like I’ve kind of figured out the game a little bit,” he said after the win. “I kind of feel like I know how to go out there and play well.

“There’s always nerves but once you hit the first completion they go away. I knew we were trying to get to the 50 or past the 50 to get a field goal so that was my main goal.”

Doege, a native of Lubbock, Tex., had spent the first two seasons of his CFL career with the Elks, dressing in 20 contests for the Green and Gold while throwing for 593 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.

“Oh yeah, that felt good,” the 27-year-old pivot said on beating his former team. “It felt it had a little more to it than any other game.

“It (coming off bench) is tough to do. But it’s part of the job and being a backup quarterback because you’ve got to prepare like you’re the starter and be ready to play when your number is called.”

Toronto (5-8) has now rattled off three consecutive wins ahead of a pivotal meeting with the Alouettes (6-7), who occupy second place in the East with 12 points.
