Two days, two jersey releases and two sponsor patches on the shoulder.
Is a new trend coming to the NHL?
The Detroit Red Wings revealed their centennial jerseys on Monday featuring their Priority Waste Management sponsorship patch on the right shoulder. Detroit’s home and away jerseys this season will feature the sponsor patch on the right side of the chest. The captain and alternate patches will sit in that spot on the centennial uniform.
Tuesday, the New York Post revealed that the New York Rangers will sport their first-ever jersey patch this season, reaching a deal with Mark Messier’s Game 7 brand. The patch will sit on the right shoulder of every jersey the team wears this season.
“The only thing that I really was vocal about is I wanted the patch to look like it’s been there for 100 years,” Messier said of the patch. “And not just something that was stuck on a jersey as a sponsorship. And I think what Game 7 stands for and what Madison Square Garden and the Rangers stand for seem to be really closely aligned.
“I think our patch, the way it looks on the jersey, also speaks to that. I think that was the most important thing to me.”
The NHL introduced sponsor patches in 2022-23, two years after introducing helmet sponsorships.
