September is coming to an end and the Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed its payment for the month. The month closes but also the end of an era. Don’t worry, they are not taking away your money but yes, the paper checks. No payment will be made by check anymore and all beneficiaries must receive their money through direct deposit or the Direct Express card.

That’s right, they call it modernity! There will be no more paper checks because they are not safe. People lost them, they were stolen… If the money goes directly to your bank account, the possibility of it being stolen is much lower.

We tell you all the changes that will take place and when the next payment will be!

Last payment of September

You surely already know what the SSA calendar is (if you don’t know it you are already late…). Well, it depends on the date of birth of each beneficiary and it is distributed among the various Wednesdays of the month. The next payment, which will be for those born between the 21st and 31st of each month, will arrive on Wednesday the 24th, neither before nor after, and they will be the last to receive the paper check because, as we said before, there will be no more!!

Why will there be no more checks?

Because they are a mess. The federal government together with the U.S. Treasury had already announced some time ago that they needed to reduce risks and fraud, as well as avoid delays in delivery… so they had to work to find a system where the money would arrive quickly to all beneficiaries, and the answer was in front of them: direct deposit.

From now on, this will be how payments are made, either to a bank account by direct deposit, or through the Direct Express® debit card (this card is created for those who do not have a traditional bank account).

Are there exceptions?

Of course, there are specific cases where beneficiaries may continue to collect on paper, especially if they do not get along well with technology.

Over 90 years old.
Those who live in rural areas without banking infrastructure.
Those with mental disabilities who cannot access electronic means.

In these cases, the SSA will study each request individually to proceed, although the future is digital, you can be sure of that.

Impact on beneficiaries

More than 65 million people in the country receive their payment each month, and now they will receive it much faster, without problems and without the possibility of losing or having the check stolen.

That said, for those who depended on the paper check, they will have to adapt to this new method, but don’t worry! The change will be very manageable.

What is Social Security?

Social Security is the largest federal assistance program in the country, with it it is ensured that retirees, people with disabilities and other beneficiaries can receive their monthly income. For many, it is their main source of income, which means that each modification in the system has a direct impact on them and their families.

The changes of October

With this change taking effect, October will be the first full month in which all payments will be made digitally, we will have to wait to see how our seniors handle checking a bank app on their phones to know whether their money has arrived or not.

The rumors are true, goodbye to checks… But hello to digital payments! More comfortable, faster and with fewer problems… The future of digitalization also goes through the SSA!
