NASCAR’s playoff and points format might be heading for its biggest crossroads yet. According to Jeff Gluck on The Teardown, the latest playoff committee meeting suggests this could be the last significant update we get for a while, and for once, it sounds like NASCAR will truly have the final say. Simplification is the keyword, and while some old ideas are still floating around, the industry and fans are split on which direction the sport should take.

NBC has reportedly stepped back from the decision, letting NASCAR own whatever comes next, though TV still holds veto power if they can’t market it.

Playoff points may be on the chopping block, with a push for an easier-to-understand format that rewards seeding and standings instead.

The size of the playoff field is still in flux, with possibilities ranging from shrinking to 12 or 10 drivers, or sticking at 16.
