From Vancouver Island to Sportsnet.
Victoria’s own Tyson Barrie is stepping off the ice and into the broadcast booth, as the 14-year NHL veteran joins the Vancouver Canucks regional broadcast team on Sportsnet for the upcoming 2025–26 season.
The Canucks made the announcement Thursday, noting that Barrie will debut on-air Friday, September 26th. The 34-year-old, who officially retired from professional hockey earlier this year, called the opportunity “a special homecoming.”
“Growing up on Vancouver Island, I always thought it would be special to finish my career with the Canucks,” said Barrie.
“While my playing days ended elsewhere, I’m grateful for the chance to start this new chapter with a great organization so close to home. I’ve always embraced the lighter side of the game, and I’m excited to bring years of insight and lots of laughs to the broadcast!”

Born and raised in Greater Victoria, Barrie’s hockey roots began with the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies before his standout junior career with the Kelowna Rockets.
There, he became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer among defencemen and captured WHL Defenceman of the Year honours in 2010.
Drafted 64th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, Barrie made his NHL debut in 2011–12 and quickly emerged as one of the league’s premier offensive blueliners.
Known for his vision and puck-moving ability, he became a key power play quarterback throughout his career.
In 822 regular season games, Barrie notched 508 points (110 goals, 398 assists) and added 21 points in 47 playoff appearances.
He wore the jersey of five NHL teams including Colorado, Toronto, Edmonton, Nashville, and Calgary.
One of his career highlights came during the 2021 season when he led all defencemen in scoring while anchoring the top-ranked Oilers power play.
Internationally, Barrie also donned the maple leaf, winning silver at the 2011 World Juniors and capturing gold and silver medals at the 2015 and 2016 IIHF World Championships.
Barrie’s transition into broadcasting brings a familiar and local voice to the Canucks’ airwaves. With over a decade of NHL experience and a strong sense of humour, he’s expected to add both insight and levity to Sportsnet’s regional coverage.
The move marks a full-circle moment for the Victoria product, who spent his childhood cheering on the Canucks and honing his game not far from Rogers Arena.
After wrapping up his final season with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, Barrie now begins a new chapter that keeps him close to his roots—and close to the game.
Fans can catch Tyson Barrie’s debut on Sportsnet on Friday, September 26th.
