Mountain View High grad Grady Millar didn’t melt in the Texas heat and advanced to the match-play portion of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship by placing among the top 64 on Tuesday after two days of stroke-play qualifying at Dallas.

Stroke play was conducted over two courses: Trinity Forest Golf Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club. Scores were then combined to get the 64-player match-play bracket.

Millar tied for 37th out of 264 golfers with a 2-over-par 143 total. He shot 1-under 70 on Monday at Trinity Forest, and then had a 3-over 73 at Brook Hollow.

Millar, a University of Washington signee, opens match play at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday against No. 20 seed Ajalawich Anantasethakul of Thailand. All golfers will play at Trinity Forest from this point forward.

University of Georgia commit Mason Howell, who played the first two rounds of the U.S. Open last month, was the stroke-play medalist at 7-under 134 to earn the top seed.

The cut to reach match play was 3-over, which matched the lowest in championship history. Exactly 64 players finished on the line or better. According to the United States Golf Association, the last time a playoff wasn’t needed to determine the last match-play spots was 2008.

Match play continues through Saturday’s 36-hole final. The champion gets an exemption into the U.S. Amateur Championship next month in San Francisco plus an exemption into the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and 2026 U.S. Amateur as long as he remains an amateur.

Pacific Coast Amateur Championship

Woodland High grad Dane Huddleston shot a 2-under 69 and tied for seventh after Tuesday’s opening round at Eugene Country Club. He boosted his score with back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17.

Huddleston, who tied for 21st last year, also helped the Oregon Golf Association team with Sam Renner of Bend, Ore., and Cole Rueck of Corvallis, Ore., to a first-place tie with Wyoming in the Morse Cup team competition. The two best scores of the three golfers during the first and second rounds of the Pacific Coast Amateur count toward the team total.

The Morse Cup, part of the Pacific Coast Amateur since 1967, has not been won by an OGA team since 1999.

The Pacific Coast Amateur continues through Friday. The top 50 and ties after Thursday’s third round make the cut for the final round.
