First year New York Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan, who was hired to replace the terminated Peter Laviolette, has made an interesting decision on Matt Rempe for an upcoming preseason game.

Hulking New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe isn’t known for his scoring, but rather his physically imposing presence on the ice.

But that isn’t stopping 1st year Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan from giving Rempe a unique opportunity – he will see time on the powerplay.

Our intention was to try Remps at the net-front during the exhibition season. Well, we really liked what we’ve seen. He’s a handful, I mean he’s a giant. He’s really strong, he makes the goaltenders’ site very difficult. He’s a handful for the defensemen at the net-front. I’ve been impressed with his stick skills, with his puck skills in those areas.

The Rangers re-signed Rempe to a new 2 year contract over the summer with an AAV (average annual value) of $975,000.

Last year, Rempe had 8 points (3G, 5A) in 42 games.

Mike Sullivan Has Replaced Peter Laviolette After Legendary Decade in Pittsburgh

The Rangers failed not only to defend their President’s Trophy win from the previous season, but missed the playoffs entirely while having to deal with multiple internal issues including reports of alleged player mutiny against GM Chris Drury.

Head coach Peter Laviolette was dismissed, and soon replaced by Mike Sullivan, who was himself dismissed by the Pittsburgh Penguins after spending nearly 10 years behind their bench.

Sullivan will get a crack at the Penguins when the Rangers open the new season on October 7 against Pittsburgh.
