Notre Dame, Ind. — Senior Maddi Shoults placed third individually to pace three Penguins in the top 10 as the Youngstown State women’s golf team collected a runner-up finish at Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish Classic on Sunday at Warren Golf Course.
The Penguins concluded the one-day, 36-hole event with a two-round team total of 607 (+31) to finish second behind the host Fighting Irish. YSU recorded a 310 (+22) in the opening round before bouncing back with a 297 (+9) in the second and final session. Three Guins finished in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
Notre Dame claimed its home tournament title at seven over par with a two-round team score of 583 after posting single round marks of 290 and 293. Youngstown State finished 23 shots better than third-place Central Michigan, Dayton placed fourth and Purdue Fort Wayne rounded out the top five on the team leaderboard.
Shoults placed third at even par with a two-round score of 144 (76-68) to earn her third top three finish of the season. The senior matched her career low round with a four-under-par 68 in the second session that featured 10 pars and six birdies. Shoults fired a three-under-par 33 on the back nine while making par or better on each of her final seven holes in the final round.
Sofia Perez Escarcena finished tied for fourth with a two-round total of 150 (78-72) to claim her fourth straight top five performance. The sophomore’s even-par 72 in the second round included 10 pars and four birdies as she made par or better on 10 of her final 11 holes. Perez Escarcena also carded an eagle on the par-five No. 7 during the first round of action.
Neeranuch Prajunpanich finished tied for 10th with a two-round 155 (75-80) to collect her fifth consecutive top 10 performance to begin the fall campaign. The junior’s first-round 75 featured 11 pars and three birdies.
Valentina Peña Anaya finished tied for 31st with a two-round score of 163 (81-82) while Maureen Burns finished in the same position with a 163 (79-84) while playing as an individual.
Bella Saur concluded the tournament with a two-round total of 169 (92-77). Competing as an individual, Adena Rugola recorded a first-round 87 before withdrawing due to injury in the second round of play.
Notre Dame’s Alexsandra Lapple earned medalist honors at three under par with a two-round 141 (68-73) while her teammate Jordan Levitt finished as the individual runner-up with a 143 (73-70).
Youngstown State will conclude the fall portion of its 2025-26 season on Oct. 18-19 with the Delaware Fall Invitational at Rehoboth Beach Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
