Max Pacioretty’s future in the NHL was up in the air all summer, and now it appears he’s headed into retirement after taking an intriguing new job.
This past season, Max Pacioretty appeared in 37 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and despite his health issues, many saw a solid future in the NHL still for the 36-year old veteran.
However, with the 2025/26 NHL regular season approaching, Pacioretty did not have a new deal, as many fans and analysts saw him simply waiting for a new spot and an offer to come from the Maple Leafs.
Max Pacioretty Working With the University of Michigan: NHL Career Likely Over
Despite all of this, Pacioretty has now seemingly made a decision on his future, as he has officially announced his next venture in hockey, as he has signed on with the University of Michigan in an unnamed role, according to Nick Alberga.
This hasn’t come along with an official retirement announcement from the player himself, but given that he’s rapidly approaching 37-years of age, it’s likely that he isn’t going to take a year off and return to the NHL in 2026/27.
If this is the end of the road for Pacioretty, he’ll end his career with 335 goals and 681 points across 939 games for Montreal, Vegas, Washington, Carolina and Toronto, as he will be remembered as one of the most respected players from this current generation.
Ultimately, Pacioretty just hasn’t been able to stay healthy as of late, playing in less than 50 games in each of the past five seasons, and with the knowledge and experience he’s gained over the years, this new role is a good one that will carry him into the future and to his next venture in the sport.
