Some ‘grande’ disappointment for fans of Starbucks in Waterloo as two locations in the city have been permanently closed.

The doors to the Starbucks at 247 King St. N. and 450 Columbia St. W. are locked, and signs have been posted, confirming the closures.

Starbucks provided a statement to 570 NewsRadio, which said the decision was made following a North America-wide review.

“During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed.”

Local coffee drinkers shared mixed reaction to the news.

“I can get that a company wants to close businesses that aren’t profitable, (but) that one seems like that would’ve been profitable because it was always busy,” said Sean, who was out near the now-former Starbucks at Columbia Street and Fischer-Hallman Road.

JC was also in that area, but he said he stopped drinking Starbucks a while ago.

“I like Starbucks but they got expensive… so now I got a fancy machine at home, and I make all my own Starbucks!”

Cali is a university student and said she was upset to see that the location at King Street and University Avenue is no longer open.

“There’s so much traffic here with all the students who want their coffee in between classes, so it’s surprising.”
