The New York Knicks are looking to secure their first NBA title in over 50 years, but they need to avoid a crushing mistake.
Over the past few years, the Knicks have had their most successful stretch in over two decades. With Tom Thibodeau at the helm, the Knicks earned a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000.
Of course, New York fell short against the Indiana Pacers, leading to Mike Brown replacing Thibodeau this offseason. While that was the team’s loudest move, New York has also done some under-the-radar deals, such as signing Guerschon Yabusele.
With the core from last season still intact, there are still some questions about whether the Knicks have enough to get over the hump. Those doubts have led to many pondering whether they will attempt a trade for LeBron James.
While there are multiple avenues to getting the four-time MVP to New York, the most frequently mentioned is a deal sending out Karl-Anthony Towns. However, Empire Sports Media’s Alexander Wilson explained why that would be a mistake.
Along with Towns coming off of one of the top years of his career, he has established himself as a top 15 player. Wilson also noted that the Knick is getting more comfortable in his role ahead of his second season with the team and that the Knicks have added some more depth around him.
Overall, it’s hard to argue with those points. While the Knicks could certainly make a deal for James and be considered the favorite in the East, running back the team that just finished two games shy of the NBA Finals is almost certainly the correct move.
