The organizers of the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan have drawn the main draw. In the main draw, two Ukrainians will compete – Marta Kostyuk and Dayana Yastremska – while Yulia Starodubtseva managed to reach only the qualifying, losing to neutral Polina Kudermetova. Elina Svitolina also will not participate, as she announced the end of the season.

Key matchups for Ukrainians in Wuhan

Marta Kostyuk, the world No. 28, will start her campaign with a match against Czech Karolína Muchová, who is ranked 12th. This is already the second head-to-head meeting between the two players in recent months: Kostyuk fell to Muchová in the US Open quarterfinals.

If Kostyuk wins in the first round, her path to the second round will go through the winner of the match between Magdalena Frech of Poland and neutral Veronika Kudermetova, who sits at No. 30 in the world rankings.

Dayana Yastremska, the world No. 31, will in the first round play against German Laura Siegemund, who is ranked 53rd. This is the fourth meeting between the rivals; the Ukrainian has won the previous three head-to-heads, including in Rome 2024 at the WTA 1000 tournament.

If Yastremska wins her opening match, her next opponent will be neutral Mirra Andreeva, the world No. 5. The best result by Ukrainians in Wuhan is reaching the quarterfinals in 2019; last year Yastremska reached the main draw but was stopped in the first round.

The main-draw matches of the WTA 1000 in Wuhan will begin on Monday, October 6, 2025.
