The New York Yankees returned from the brink of elimination against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, winning a pivotal game and earning themselves a chance to tie the series on Wednesday.
No matter what happens next in the series or deeper into the playoffs for the teams, it’s clear that there is little love lost between these American League East rivals. The two teams battled all year long for supremacy in the division and members of the media haven’t minced words about the rivalry.
In just one example of the contention, Blue Jays broadcaster and former manager Buck Martinez shared that he feels the Yankees are “not a good team” in early September. That comment caught some attention and Martinez was asked to address it during a recent appearance on the New York Post Sports’ “The Show” podcast.
Martinez doubled down on his criticisms of the Yankees during that podcast appearance, and he also revealed that the comments caught the attention of Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
“When I first saw (Boone) in Toronto … before Game 1, he said ‘I don’t like your hair, either,’” Martinez said on “The Show,” recalling the Yankees manager’s personal response to his criticism of the team.
Martinez appeared to be in good spirits about that rather personal jab about his appearance, and Boone probably meant no harm to his rival’s broadcaster. Although the series has been heated and it seems the two teams will be competing for divisional supremacy for years to come, Martinez and Boone are able to keep their more personal rivalry in good spirits.
