Arturo Gatti Jr., the 17-year-old son of former boxing champion Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, has died in Mexico, similar to his father’s death in 2009.

Chuck Zito, a longtime friend and former bodyguard for Gatti Sr., broke the news Wednesday on Instagram, stating that he had died by suicide.

Zito wrote he was found the same way his father was found in a Brazil apartment 16 years ago. Gatti Jr. was just 10 months old when his father, whose death was confirmed as a suicide, died in 2009 at 37.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I have to say,…. R.I.P. to 17-year-old ARTURO GATTI JR…..” he wrote. “My condolences to Arturo Gatti Seniors – Mom, Sisters, Brothers, and his daughter Sophia.”

Mexican authorities have yet to publicly release a formal finding on the cause of death.

Gatti Jr. had been training in boxing since childhood with ambitions of going professional and was the only son of the boxing champ. Born in 2008, he grew up between Canada and Brazil before recently relocating to Mexico.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Gatti Jr. developed a strong interest in boxing from a young age, training under several respected coaches and showing promise as an amateur fighter.
