Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has identified central midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza as a possible addition to the club’s future midfield plans. The 20-year-old Elche midfielder has been one of Spain’s standout performers at the U-20 World Cup, forming a strong partnership with current academy prospect Thiago Pitarch in the heart of midfield. ESPN reported that Madrid had contacts in place to sign Mendoza for Castilla last winter.
Mendoza’s composure, tactical intelligence, and maturity have caught Alonso’s attention, aligning closely with Madrid’s current recruitment philosophy of acquiring young, high-upside Spanish talent. His contract with Elche runs until 2028 and includes a €20 million release clause — a figure that would make him an attainable target should Madrid decide to move.
Club sources at Valdebebas view Mendoza as a natural fit for Alonso’s system, capable of playing in a possession-based, press-resistant midfield. The player remains grounded, focused on his development with Elche and Spain’s youth setup.
Other names on Madrid’s radar include Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Kees Smit of AZ Alkmaar, but Mendoza is highly valued by Alonso’s coaching staff.
