Racing Bulls Formula One driver Liam Lawson has opened up about his future in the sport since his current contract expires after the 2025 season. Without a confirmed seat for the 2026 season, Lawson joins the list of six F1 drivers who face an F1 exit threat.

Lawson proved himself after replacing Daniel Ricciardo mid-season last year. His performance alongside Yuki Tsunoda impressed the Red Bull management, which led to his promotion after the 2024 season. However, after just two races of the current season, he was demoted back to Racing Bulls, while Tsunoda took his Red Bull seat alongside Max Verstappen.

The Kiwi driver’s performance has improved since being dropped from Red Bull, as he is placed 14th in the standings with 30 points. His best finish of P5 arrived at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Tsunoda’s seat at Red Bull is also not secure for the 2026 season, given his performance concerns. However, it is unlikely that Lawson would receive another chance next year by replacing the Japanese driver.

Despite just six races remaining before the current season ends, Lawson has yet to receive an update from his team about a potential contract extension. When asked by the media when he would like to be informed about his 2026 racing plans, Lawson said:

“I’d love to know tomorrow, honestly. But obviously, in this camp, it’s very normal to be left on hold a little bit. That’s how it is at the moment.

“I know the only thing that has control over that is my performance in the car. So until I have that answer, that’s just what I’m focused on.”

One advantage for Lawson is that the remaining races on the F1 calendar are not new for him. He added:

“There are some very exciting, unique, cool races coming up as well. For me as well, having done a full cycle of tracks, going to tracks that I’ve done before, it’s exciting.

“It’s the part I enjoy most out of the season. So I would say I’m more focused on that than anything [else].”
