Rangers have been forced to turn their attention to other managerial candidates after Steven Gerrard pulled out of the race to become gaffer.

The former Ibrox boss held positive talks with club chiefs in London this weekend about a stunning return to Glasgow.

But Gerrard felt the timing wasn’t right to become Russell Martin’s replacement and the 45-year-old is now out of the running.

Rangers’ hierarchy were informed that the Liverpool legend was withdrawing from the process and they’re now speaking to other candidates.

German coach Danny Rohl is the new favourite after impressing senior figures at Ibrox in preliminary discussions.

Mailsport understands ex-Chelsea and West Ham boss Graham Potter and former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil have also been sounded out.

But Rohl is a front-runner for the job.

The 36-year-old has previously been assistant boss at Bayern Munich, Southampton and the German national team – before a two-year stint as Hillsborough boss.

He left the crisis club this summer and is looking for a return to management.

Potter is also of interest to Rangers after his short-lived stint at West Ham ended in September following just nine months at the helm.

The former Swansea and Brighton head coach is on Gers’ radar but Mailsport understands he’s unlikely to take on the role at Ibrox.

Ex-Bournemouth and Wolves gaffer O’Neil has been out of work since being sacked at Molineux last December.

He’s another Rangers are considering after they fired Martin last weekend, with the Ibrox side lying eighth in the Scottish Premiership table.

After Gerrard agreed to speak to the club in the last few days, excited Rangers fans expected him to secure a sensational second spell in charge.

After leading them to their 55th title four years ago, the England icon left for Aston Villa but is keen on a return to management after leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq.

Despite constructive talks with chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Parrag Marathe that won’t be happening.

It’s understood Gerrard was grateful for the backing he’s received from Rangers fans to replace Martin and hasn’t ruled out managing the club again in the future.

But for now, the club’s hierarchy are tasked with trying to get a new man in place for Saturday’s Premiership fixture at home to Dundee United.

Rohl is a leading candidate but it’s understood others will be spoken to in the next 48 hours.
