Kevin Federline writes in his new memoir he fears ex-wife Britney Spears “situation” is “racing toward something irreversible”
Federline also claims that the pair’s sons sometimes saw Spears watching them sleep with a knife in her hand

Kevin Federline is sounding the alarm over allegedly concerning behavior involving his ex-wife Britney Spears, with whom he shares two children, according to an excerpt of his upcoming memoir shared by The New York Times.
Federline, 47, writes in his memoir You Thought You Knew (out Oct. 21) that he fears the pop star’s “situation” is “racing toward something irreversible” — and reveals that his sons claimed that their mom sometimes watched them sleep with a knife in her hand.
“It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour,” he reportedly writes. “Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces.”
The DJ and reality TV star told the Times that he hasn’t spoken to Spears, 43, in “years,” though the two share sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, who grew up largely in Federline’s custody. Spears spent 13 years in a conservatorship under the thumb of her father Jamie Spears, though the conservatorship was terminated by a judge in November 2021.

The pop star’s time under Jamie’s control has long faced scrutiny, as she has claimed repeatedly that it was a traumatic period, while Jamie maintains that he was acting in his daughter’s best interest.
In his book, Federline writes that the “Free Britney” movement — which saw fans campaigning to have the star freed from her conservatorship — “started from a good place,” but was ultimately harmful.
“All those people who put so much effort into that should now put the same energy into the ‘Save Britney’ movement,” he writes, according to the Times. “Because this is no longer about freedom. It’s about survival,” he adds — “Now, more than ever, [our children] need your support. I’ve been their buffer for years, but now it’s bigger than me. It’s time to sound the alarm.”
A rep for Spears did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Federline does not offer specifics as to his exact worries regarding Spears, though fans of the “Toxic” singer have expressed concern in recent months amid a series of erratic social media videos, many of which feature Spears nude and dancing.

Though Spears denied any significant issues with substance abuse issues in her own memoir, 2023’s The Woman in Me, Federline claims in his book that she used drugs and alcohol and was prone to “angry outbursts” toward the end of their three-year marriage, which started in 2004 and ended in 2007.
Federline reportedly writes in his book about a 2008 incident in which Spears was placed under a 72-hour involuntary psychiatric hold following a three-hour standoff at her home when it came time to hand her children back to Federline, per their custody agreement.
“It was one of the hardest nights of my life. I felt sick over what she was going through,” he writes. “This was someone I had loved. Someone I had built a life with. The mother of my children.”
Spears, meanwhile, told her side of the story in her own memoir, writing of the incident: “The only thing I was guilty of was feeling desperate to keep my own children for a few more hours and to get some reassurance that I wasn’t going to lose them for good.”

In an interview with the Times, Federline said he’d “never” been “against Britney,” and has tried to help his sons have a great relationship with their mom.
“It’s hard because when I really reflect on everything that’s happened — my kids do not know the woman that I married,” he told the outlet. “And I’ve spent two decades trying to bridge that gap.”
In his book, Federline reportedly writes that Preston and Jayden became fearful of visiting Spears’ home as teenagers, as they said that they would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to her standing in the doorway watching them sleep with a knife in her hands.
The pop star told PEOPLE in 2023 that becoming a mother was her “dream come true.”
In June, she shared a photo of her and Jayden at home after attending church together.
Federline — who now lives in Hawaii with his children and wife Victoria — announced his memoir in August, saying in a statement that the book will be “extremely intimate and transparent.”
“I achieved my biggest dreams, dealt with crushing heartbreak, and endured constant ridicule, all while becoming the father my children needed as they experienced nonstop emotional turbulence,” he said. “If you’ve ever had questions, you’ll find answers here.”
