A handful of Saskatchewan Roughriders starters will be on the sidelines for the team’s Week 20 matchup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The laundry list of names includes the pair of 1,000-yard wideouts KeeSean Johnson and Dohnte Meyers, 1,000-yard rusher A.J. Ouellette, and numerous defensive starters including defensive linemen Micah Johnson and Shane Ray, and defensive backs Rolan Milligan Jr. and Marcus Sayles.
Notably, quarterback Trevor Harris is available for the contest, but was a limited participant all week while not taking any first-team reps.
That means Jake Maier is in line to get his second start of the season, after completing 13-of-23 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions back in Week 4 while Harris was out with a head injury.
Across three seasons as a full-time starter with the Stamps, the 28-year-old Maier completed 68.7 per cent of his passes for 10,474 yards, 55 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions.
With first place in the West Division locked up and a home playoff game clinched, Saskatchewan will be taking the rest and recover approach into this one, even if it means boosting their biggest rivals’ playoff hopes.
A win against the Roughriders would virtually clinch a playoff spot for the Blue Bombers, though they would need an Edmonton Elks loss and/or a Calgary Stampeders win to lock it in.
