York Regional Police released footage of the arrest of suspects following a smash-and-grab robbery at a jewelry store in Newmarket, Ont.
Video released by police in York Region shows the takedown of a suspect vehicle following a smash-and-grab robbery at a Newmarket, Ont., jewelry store that was captured by surveillance cameras.
The incident happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday inside Upper Canada Mall, at Yonge Street and Davis Drive.
Investigators say five masked suspects entered the store armed with hammers and smashed display cases, filling duffel bags with jewelry worth nearly $100,000, before fleeing in a white Mercedes SUV.
While fleeing, the suspects were confronted by mall security and an aerosol irritant was discharged toward the guards, said police.
The footage starts at the mall and continues with a police pursuit on southbound Highway 404 during which several officers attempt to corral and stop a white SUV.
Police are seen a short time later boxing in that vehicle just off the highway on Steeles Avenue.
Moments later, officers appear to be chasing after a number of suspects who fled on foot.
They are also seen handcuffing some of them at that intersection.
Police say four of the five suspects were arrested.
Three teenage boys, two from Brampton (age 15 and 16) and a 16-year-old from Toronto, as well as 18-year-old Toronto resident Kareem Haniff have each been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, and one count each of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, robbery with an offensive weapon, and disguise with intent.
Police say at the time of this offence, Haniff was bound by an undertaking, while one of the 16-year-old youths was on a release order for unrelated offences.

A fifth suspect remains outstanding.
He is described as a male, 16 to 20-years-old with a thin build, and last seen wearing a black hoodie, black pants, black shoes, and a black face mask.
Further investigation revealed the vehicle that was allegedly used in the robbery had been stolen earlier in the morning during a home invasion in Vaughan. Police said it has not been determined at this point if the same suspects were involved in that incident.
