PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s soccer team beat the Marquette University Golden Eagles, 1-0, on Friday, Oct. 17 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. With the win, the Friars improve to 5-6-1 (3-2-0 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-5-2 (0-5-0 BIG EAST). Senior Sam Montalto (Stonington, Conn.) scored the lone goal of the game when he connected on a header off a corner sent in by Pearse O’Brien (West Hartford, Conn.). Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.) earned his third clean sheet of the season in net.

GAME FLOWS & NOTES

• Providence got on the board in the 32nd minute (31:45), when Sam Montalto converted a header from a corner kick cross by Pearse O’Brien

• The goal marked Montalto’s fourth of the season and O’Brien’s fourth assist.

• The Friars applied constant pressure in the first half, holding a 7-5 advantage in shots going into the break.

• Providence continued the pressure in the second half, ending the game with 12 shots, including six shots on goal.

Ryan Carney made two saves, including a diving effort in the first half, to secure the shutout.

• The Friars’ back line of Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal), Charlie Dickerson (Norwich, England), Cameron Yriondo (Sammamish, Wash.) and Mitchel Varley (Portsmouth, N.H.) anchored a strong defensive effort, limiting Marquette to only two shots in the second half.

• Freshman Angelo Ventrella (Toronto, Canada) led the Friars in shots with three.
