The Ferrari F40 is a serious contender for the title of best car of all time, a mid-engined supercar that combines pure driving joy with the most advanced technology of the mid-1980s. The V-6 hybrid Ferrari 296 GTB shares little more than a badge with the F40, but it has its own charms as an exceptional driving machine. Ferrari’s latest one-off combines the two, merging the basic components of the 296 with the wedge-like styling of the F40.

This car, the SC40, is the latest work from Ferrari’s Special Projects program. Like other one-off Ferraris before it, this is an official Ferrari model built for one customer largely out of existing parts from the brand’s current lineup. The Italian marque says that the “architecture, chassis, and powertrain” of this particular model come from the 296, making this an 830 hp V-6 hybrid that can get to 60 mph from a standstill in under 3 seconds.

While this is effectively a 296 underneath, the styling is a major departure from the 250 LM-like supercar that other buyers know. Ferrari says that the goal of the one-off SC40 was “not to create a literal reinterpretation [of the F40], but rather a model with its own distinct personality. ” Much of that distinct personality may be borrowed from the brand’s existing V-6 supercar, but the SC40 stands on its own visually with softer lines than the F40. Other traits, from the sharp nose in the front to the fixed wing in the back, are direct tributes to its inspiration.

The color is a unique shade called SC40 White, one that pairs well with an F40-like red interior. Further F40 influence comes in the form of Kevlar interior elements, a massive lifting engine cover, and an “SC40” logo on just the right side of the car’s wing.

Since this is a one-off, it is unlikely that Ferrari will make another anytime soon. Customers interested in their own wedge-like Ferrari can check out the 849 Testarossa, a successor to the outgoing SF90. Otherwise, their best option is to separately buy an F40 and a 296 GTB.
