For one Island in Scotland, Tiree, this is reality after the fibre cable connecting the island to the mainland was damaged during Storm Amy earlier this month.
Whilst they now have a temporary system in place for essential services like doctors and the post office, BBC Scotland News says that the island community have been asked to avoid making video calls or use online streaming in case it brings down the broadband services.
