Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz aired out some frustration with the team’s slow start to the season following a 4-3 overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken on Saturday night.

Stolarz, now beginning his second year in Toronto, saved 24-of-28 shot attempts he faced against Seattle, allowing the eventual overtime winner to Josh Mahura at the 3:06 mark father extra frame.

Mahura skated into the offensive zone and beat Leafs winger William Nylander to the front of net before scoring on Stolarz blocker side with the game on his stick.

“You know, how many points are we going to leave out there?” the 31-year-old netminder said after the loss. “The potential’s there. Like, we have the skill. We have the grit. We have the grind. It’s just frustrating that we just can’t put it together right now.

“I mean, a lot of guys have been here for a while. Overtime, you can’t let someone beat you up the ice there and gets a clear-cut breakaway,” he added. “A minute left, you want to be on the ice in that situation, you gotta work hard…it cost us a point.”

Just early-season issues?

Stolarz was also involved in an incident towards the end of the second period on Saturday in which Kraken forward Mason Marchment drove hard into the crease and knocked Stolarz down to the ice.

The Edison, N.J., native got up and flipped the net over before going after Marchment, igniting a scrum in his crease.

“I mean, I’m not happy,” said the 10-year veteran. “I’m going to try and stand up for myself. I heard the ref say we got a power play…kudos to the guys who were there and got down with him…it’s not fun. I don’t like having 225-pound guys laying on me.”

“Maybe we can take a page out of their book and go to the net,” he added. “We like to go low to high and shoot but for their goalie it’s like playing catch…we’re not making it difficult.”

Toronto fell to 3-2-1 on the season following the loss to Seattle, taking seven points from their first six games played. They currently occupy third place in the Atlantic Division.

Stolarz has started in all but one of the team’s games this year with Joseph Woll still on personal leave, posting a 2.79 goals-against average and an .897 save percentage.

The Leafs are back in action on Tuesday night as they play host to their former head coach Sheldon Keefe and the New Jersey Devils.
