“We will have another nice dinner before the year ends,” Oliveira said. ‘It is always a little bit of an expensive dinner, but it doesn’t matter because it is worth it. I get credited with a lot of success, which is great, but (the offensive line should get the spotlight).”

“It speaks volumes to the work I put in here and in the off-season, but more importantly, it says a lot about this locker room and the guys I get to work with every day,” Oliveira said. “The continuity of the offensive line during the last number of seasons, without them, nothing is possible.”

Yet again, the 28-year-old Winnipeg native is the team’s nominee in the CFL’s most outstanding player category and the most outstanding Canadian player category.

Oliveira was the CFLs Most Outstanding Player last season and a runner-up the previous season. He has been the league’s top Canadian in each of the last two years.

“We love his style,” head coach Mike O’Shea said. “He is hardnosed, and he is tough. You can give him all the touches, but he catches the ball so well too. If you think about how much contact he takes in a game and he thrives of delivering punishment, not just taking it.”

At the completion of every season, Oliveira searches for ways to improve his production and to be one per cent better every day. This past off-season, he wanted to become a reliable option out of the backfield for Zach Collaros.

“There are always ways and areas of your game where you continue to build on, and I thought, going into this season, was: ‘I think there is more I can do in the receiving game,’ ” he said. “I have always had a great rapport and trust with Zach. When those are hitting in a game, the trust is there as he is looking for me more than he ever has.”

Consequently, Oliveira has set career-highs in catches with 61 and reception yards at 546 with one game remaining in the regular season. Montreal is in town on Saturday to close out the regular season.

Oliveira’s status for the finale against the Alouettes is a question mark.

“Every single week, my mindset is that I am playing,” he said. “You don’t get a lot of opportunities to play this game, and I always think about how much work I put in during the off-season, and I work too damn hard to miss games. I want to play as many games as I can. Count me in. I want to play.”

Even though he has turned himself into a passing threat, Oliveira is sure as it gets out of the backfield with 1,163 yards. This season was his fourth season reaching the 1,000-yard mark in rushing yards.

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks alumnus will treat the men up front to a meal after helping him earn another year of productivity.

“We will have another nice dinner before the year ends,” Oliveira said. ‘It is always a little bit of an expensive dinner, but it doesn’t matter because it is worth it. I get credited with a lot of success, which is great, but (the offensive line should get the spotlight).”

Oliveira admitted it was satisfying to hit the 1,000-yard rushing mark, and it is nice to win awards, but that isn’t what informs his off-season training. He has two championships. Rest assured he wants three.

“My main focus is to win the Grey Cup,” Oliveira said. “That is my motivation.”

The voting was conducted by four members of the local chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada and the league’s head coaches. The league announced all the league’s nominees on Wednesday morning.

The next round of voting for the CFL awards will see the West and East Division winners announced next week, followed by the CFL’s Player Awards on Nov. 13 at the Club Regent Event Centre during the Grey Cup festivities here in Winnipeg.
