Fighting a 19-year-old in Magaluf might sound like a stag-do gone wrong, but Derek Lynas trained hard for the occasion at Rosyth’s Goliath MMA.

It almost didn’t go ahead, due to a mix-up with his required weight.

Derek said: “We found out 15 minutes after I was to drive to the weigh-ins that my weight was wrong.

“I thought I was going to be fighting at 61.5kg, but it was actually 59.4kg. I had to go into the sauna there and then, to cut two in an hour and a half.

“I was running back and forward in the sauna, and then I arrived late.”

It was a convincing second-round win for Derek, who took up the sport just four years ago.

Discussing his opponent, he said: “He was a good guy too, but I dislocated his shoulder and he had to get painkiller injections, so he couldn’t have a drink with me after it.

“He was texting me the next day asking me to go out to a club, but I was there with my wife and we were having a day to ourselves.”

Before the trip, he pointed out that last time he was in Magaluf, the young man wasn’t even born yet.

The victory made it three wins out of three fights for the “hobbyist who takes his pastime seriously”, and he celebrated with a tattoo to mark the occasion.

He said: “There’s been a big discussion with my wife. That was supposed to be my last fight, but we thought ‘since it was abroad, should we have one more?

“As soon as I won, the promoter came over and announced that my next one will be a title shot. My wife said she wants me to have one, and we can invite everybody who has never been to see me.

“But that will be it, it’s not something I can continue to do for the next ten years.”

He hopes that it will take place in Dunfermline around February time.

Derek complimented his teammates at Goliath, commenting: “You can’t do this without everybody. You need them there for sparring, coaching, and mentoring.

“When you’re on your knees and don’t think you can do it anymore, there’s always someone there in your ear saying, ‘yes you can’.”

The fighter wished to thank Dan Robson and Fight Island Championship, Stephen Harris from Goliath, Lee Emslie, Scott Malone, and both of his parents.

He also shouted out sponsors Milncroft and SRJ Windows.
