CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – West Virginia is taking a high-tech step ahead.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Thursday that West Virginians can now have their ID on their phone.
“West Virginia has officially launched support for drivers license and state issued IDs in Apple Wallet,” Morrisey said.
To get your ID onto your Apple Wallet, all you need to do is open the Apple Wallet app, hit the plus icon in the corner, then select drivers license and click West Virginia.
Eric Tipton, executive director of the DMV, said, “Follow those on screen prompts from there. It’s going to walk you through a facial recognition portion of that, so you will have a face scan and all of this is validated on the DMV side.”
Once the verification process is finished, you will get a notification and can begin using your ID from Apple Wallet.
Having an ID on your iPhone will work for airports, so as flyers go through TSA, grabbing you ID is just a little bit easier.
Paige Withrow, chief marketing officer for West Virginia International Yeager Airport, said, “Still keep that ID with you, but it helps not getting everything out of your pockets at once and just streamlines the process.”
Currently, using your ID through Apple Wallet is only accepted at the airport but as more agencies are added to the program, Governor Morrisey said they will continue to update the public every step of the way.
