Montgomery Whitewater, Lakeshore Foundation announce adaptive youth cycling event

  • October 30, 2025

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A new partnership between Montgomery Whitewater and the Lakeshore Foundation, a Birmingham-based nonprofit, is aiming to expand access to the outdoors for the less able-bodied.

The two organizations will host “Everyone Can Ride,” an inclusive adaptive youth cycling event for kids, at Montgomery Whitewater on Nov. 8.

Designed for children ages 12 and under, the event Will give young riders a chance to develop and test their skills in a friendly race around a half-mile course.

Adaptive cycles will be provided by Lakeshore Foundation for children with disabilities, ensuring that every participant has a way to join the ride.

“This partnership marks an exciting new chapter for both organizations,” said Jason Wilson, executive director of Montgomery Whitewater. “We’re building a platform for inclusive outdoor recreation where every child – regardless of ability – can experience the joy of movement, confidence and community in the outdoors.”

Chris Thomason, chief advancement officer at the Lakeshore Foundation, said the event is a perfect example of what their mission is about.

“We hosted our first Little Hammies event last year and recently hosted a second race this summer. It was wonderful to see children of all ability levels race, laugh and play together,” he said. “Since our earliest days, Lakeshore has been about fitness, health and inclusion. This event fits our mission so well.

“Everyone Can Ride” is the first of several planned collaborations between the two organizations and will look to develop future outdoor programs at Montgomery Whitewater that are tailored for disabled and nondisabled people of all ages.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. at the park.
