Ferrari has reportedly already made its decision regarding Lewis Hamilton’s contract, which is set to expire in 2026. Should the seven-time world champion leave, the team already has a plan in place for his successor.
It’s now evident to everyone that Hamilton’s first year in red has not met the expectations that surrounded his arrival. For this reason, Ferrari is already evaluating its future options, as the British driver’s current deal runs until the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
When the move was first announced, there was a lot of speculation about the clauses included in the agreement between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari. Some sources suggested that the former Mercedes driver, who races with the number 44, might have the option to extend his contract for 2027. However, this extension would depend heavily on Ferrari’s performance under the new regulations that will take effect with the next generation of Formula 1 cars.
But Ferrari may have already made its choice
According to a report from ESPN following the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, Ferrari may have already made up its mind. The American sports network claims that the Maranello team was particularly impressed by Oliver Bearman’s performance at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
As a result, Ferrari may have already decided on its 2027 driver lineup — with Lewis Hamilton expected to leave and make room for the young Haas driver. The Scuderia reportedly does not intend to offer Lewis Hamilton a contract renewal, especially considering the difficulties he has encountered during his debut season with the Italian team.
That said, much will still depend on the results of the 2026 season. If Lewis Hamilton manages to prove he still possesses the speed that once made him one of the greatest drivers in motorsport history, his chances of remaining with Ferrari could increase significantly. On the other hand, if the British driver continues to struggle with the new generation of cars, his departure would appear almost inevitable.
