Carlo Ratti Associati has revealed designs for a digitally fabricated bivouac set to debut during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Designed in collaboration with Salone del Mobile Milano, the structure will be relocated to a permanent site in the Alps after the games.

Developed through 3D scanning of Alpine rock formations, the structure’s design minimizes visual impact while reflecting the crystalline geometry of its surroundings. Constructed from cross-laminated timber, aerogel, and metal, the shelter operates independently in remote, water-scarce environments using a photovoltaic system and an air-condensation water generator.

The scheme departs from the brightly colored aesthetic of traditional mountain shelters, instead employing a subdued exterior designed to blend into the landscape. A red beacon activates only during low-visibility conditions to aid safety.
