The X-Men‘s Age of Revelation event has seen many members of the beloved team die. However, the fate of Jean Grey, a.k.a. Phoenix, was left ambiguous in the wake of a new Phoenix Force host. Jean Grey’s death has now been confirmed, but she has also found a way to defy death yet again.

Written by Stephanie Phillips, with art by Giada Belviso, the Binary miniseries centers around the future version of Carol Danvers. In the X-Men: Age of Revelation timeline, Carol has become the Phoenix Force host. She also resumed using the Binary codename she used before becoming Captain Marvel. However, the first issue of her solo miniseries set in the dark future revealed nothing of what happened to Jean Grey.
What happened to Jean Grey in X-Men: Age of Revelation?
Binary #2 opens with a flashback to the death of Jean Grey. It is revealed that she sacrificed herself trying to confine the X-Virus to Earth. Captain Marvel discovered her in the middle of this and promised to continue what Jean had started. With her dying breath, the X-Men matriarch transferred her powers to Carol Danvers while promising she would always be with her.

Years later, in the X-Men: Age of Revelation timeline, Jean revealed herself to Carol in the midst of a terrorist attack. First, she briefly appeared as herself talking to Carol through her own reflection. However, Jean ultimately manifested physically as a fiery bird, having become one with the Phoenix Force.

Before the attack, Carol had been having a crisis of faith, wondering if she had truly been taking advantage of her new powers to the fullest. Jean reassured Carol that she had been doing fine and doubted she could do any better. Indeed, Jean promised the new Phoenix Force host her support, both emotionally and in battle.
Binary #2 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
