The Phillies, looking to fill their bench coach vacancy, are reported to have talked to former Yankees legend and 1985 American League MVP Don Mattingly.

Separating from the AL champion Toronto Blue Jays after the World Series, it would be a reunion for “Donnie Ballgame” and Phillies manager Rob Thomson, who were on the Yankees coaching staff together previously.

The fact that Mattingly’s son Preston is the Phillies general manager is worth noting.

Mattingly may have his eye on another managerial position. Mattingly managed the Dodgers from 2010-15 and the Marlins from ’16-22. The only manager job open is with the Colorado Rockies.

“At this point I just want to chill and figure out what I want to do,” Mattingly said. “I don’t know. You just wake up today, take everything in, try to relax from the season, and again, just trying to see what comes up and what balances the family and work.”
