WNBA sensation Sophie Cunningham delivered a brutal blow to NASCAR drivers after witnessing the Cup Series Championship Race firsthand.

The basketball star made her way to Phoenix Raceway on Sunday to watch Kyle Larson secure his second championship in a spectacular comeback triumph. During her visit, she captured a snapshot with Sydney Sweeney away from the track – a meeting that immediately set social media ablaze.

Speaking on the latest installment of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, Cunningham faced a question from co-host Wes Wilson about whether any drivers on the circuit grabbed her attention.

The 29-year-old admitted they were all far too diminutive for her preferences, responding: “Wes, they all come up to my belly button.”

Standing at a 6-foot-1, Cunningham dwarfs numerous prominent figures in NASCAR. New champion Larson, for reference, stands at merely 5-foot-6, while race victor Ryan Blaney reaches just 5-foot-9.

While Cunningham didn’t discover any romantic prospects at Sunday’s competition, she did assert she found a potential “best friend” in Sweeney.

Posting on social media, the free agent guard uploaded an image posing with the actress accompanied by the message: “One of us forgot our t— at home @sydney_sweeney.”

Discussing the playful remark, Cunningham explained: “Dude, I thought that was hilarious. And so many people thought that I was being serious. And I was like, dude, this is not a competition. My t— are clearly way better than hers.”

Cunningham relished her brief encounter with Sweeney, revealing: “She’s actually so nice. I think she’s a very nice girl. I’d be best friends with her. … We just talked for like, I’d say a minute, two minutes. It was really quick because there’s celebrities and VIPs. And so we were all kind of doing our own thing. So it was a very quick, like, ‘Hey, how are you? So nice to meet you.'”.

But meeting Sweeney wasn’t the only highlight of Cunningham’s day, as she later secured a coveted spot in the pace car’s passenger seat – the safety vehicle that guides the racing field at reduced speed just before the action begins.

“I got to do the pace car. It was f—— awesome. I don’t even know how to explain it. The whole time I was just happy. Like, I was so content,” Cunningham shared. “We did five laps. So it’s like them all kind of warming up.

“It was so cool. There’s one time we went really fast because they all practice going into the pit and whatnot. And so we have to keep up with them. It was just like the coolest experience ever.”

Though the 2025 Championship Race wasn’t Cunningham’s first NASCAR experience, the Columbia, Missouri native insisted she walked away Sunday with newfound respect for the sport. “I had a f—— blast at NASCAR. Like I think those are my people. That’s where I belong,” Cunningham declared.
