Recently, a pair of homeowners in Australia rushed to their patio when they heard their dogs barking at something in the yard. From the other side of their sliding glass doors, they spotted a terrified koala pressed against the window panes, backed into a corner by the dogs blocking his path.
Unsure what to do, the homeowners opened the door. To their great surprise, the koala darted in the house and ran straight to their bedroom.
WIRES
The homeowners needed some expert help. They quickly called WIRES Wildlife Rescue, who sent a rescuer named Tanya to the scene.
Armed with a special containment bag, Tanya entered the bedroom and carefully secured the scared animal.
“Luckily, he was relatively calm, probably [because] he was no longer feeling threatened by the barking dogs outside,” Tanya told The Dodo. “Being up on a bed instead of a tree meant he had nothing to hang on to … so he was relatively easy to contain.”
The rescuer nicknamed the koala Mr. Stainfield, after the street on which he was rescued. She brought him to Northern Rivers Koala Hospital, where he was assessed for injuries. The koala was in good health, and rescuers soon released him back into the wild, in a familiar home territory with plenty of food and water.
WIRES
It’s important to help koalas, especially as they continue to face environmental threats. According to the Australian Koala Foundation, koalas are listed as endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act in many Australian states, including Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
Tanya encourages community members to protect koalas like Mr. Stainfield by keeping their dogs and cats indoors at night. Drivers should always look out for wildlife crossing roads, particularly at dawn and dusk, when nocturnal animals are on the move. If anyone finds a wild animal in distress, they should always call WIRES or their nearest wildlife rescue group for advice.
In this case, the homeowners made the right choice, and now Mr. Stainfield is back in the trees, safe after his brush with humanity.
