The Manitoba government is contributing $100,000 to help Brandon University replace the aging dome at the Gulliver Astronomical Observatory, ensuring continued public access to the province’s largest telescope.
The funding, announced on Friday in the Wheat City, adds to a $50,000 donation from the family of the late astronomy professor Dr. Austin Gulliver.
Installed in 1971, the observatory’s original dome is no longer weatherproof and must be operated manually. The new dome will be automated, weather-sealed, and internet-connected, allowing remote operation and live online viewing.

“Brandon University researchers tackle questions spanning from the soils of Manitoba to the stars in the furthest galaxies,” said Dr. Christine Bovis-Cnossen, president and vice-chancellor, Brandon University.
Bovis-Cnossen added the upgrade will protect valuable equipment and expand research and learning opportunities for students and the community.
The Manitoba New Democratic Party’s annual convention started Friday in Brandon, with 400 attendees expected to attend. The event matches the last time the party held its convention in Brandon as a sitting government in 2013.
