The Toronto Maple Leafs lost forward Scott Laughton to an upper-body injury in their game against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

The team announced the forward would not return after he departed in the second period.

After the game, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube told reporters that Laughton will miss the team’s next game on Sunday, which is against the Carolina Hurricanes, and that there is no timeline available beyond that.

Berube also told reporters that he “thought it was a head shot,” and that he needed to “take a closer look at it.”

Laughton absorbed a massive hit from Bruins defenceman Nikita Zadorov while attempting to play the puck up the ice in the Leafs’ defensive zone. He appeared to be shaken up and immediately skated off the ice towards the bench.

Laughton’s teammate Bobby McMann engaged Zadorov in a fight immediately after, and both players were sent off on five-minute penalties as a result.

This was just Laughton’s second appearance of the young season for the Maple Leafs, after he missed the first 13 games of the campaign recovering from a lower-body injury suffered in pre-season. The Maple Leafs acquired Laughton in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers at last year’s deadline, and he has registered just six points in 34 games (including last year’s playoffs) with Toronto.

Prior to departing with the injury, Laughton had recorded one blocked shot and four hits in 6:13 of ice time.
