A bizarre incident unfolded during Sunday’s NASCAR Mexico Series championship race. A safety car crashed into one of the competitor’s race cars.

The incident took place after Santiago Tovar crashed into the tire barrier in his No. 22 Quaker State Ford. Tovar’s car sat buried in the tires as safety crews rushed to the scene of the crash. One truck pulled to the side as crew members disembarked.

The second safety car, a silver SUV, then came flying into view before slamming into the front, right fender of the No. 22 Quaker State Ford. The driver then reversed out of the crash before climbing from the damaged safety car.

The incident, as expected, caught viewers and broadcasters alike by surprise. The fans audibly gasped when the safety car plowed into Tovar’s Ford. They then began laughing and whistling as the driver climbed out of the vehicle. One of the analysts also quietly uttered a question, which essentially translated into “what happened” in English.

The NASCAR Mexico Series finale took place at the Miguel E. Abed Racetrack in Amozoc, Puebla. It featured this bizarre incident, as well as multiple others. This event took on a chaotic form as the top four drivers battled for the championship trophy.

The final lap of the race, in particular, featured three drivers in contention for the championship. Alex de Alba accomplished his goal of winning as he went from seventh to fourth before taking the checkered flag.

How did de Alba accomplish this? He took advantage of a crash between championship contenders Julio Rejón and Max Gutiérrez. These two tried to wreck each other in the final turn, which created a massive wreck.

De Alba navigated by the crash and raced toward the checkered flag. Gutiérrez got back to de Alba’s bumper and appeared to try to turn him. However, de Alba crossed the finish line and captured the championship.
