Carson Meyer was an intriguing prospect taken in 2017, but after struggling for a full-time NHL role, he’s officially been waived by the Buffalo Sabres.
The Buffalo Sabres 2025/26 has been full of inconsistency thus far, and while they’ve flashed plenty of potential, they’ve also had a lot go against them in the first month of the campaign.
Their depth has been tested, and to this point, they’ve shown plenty of fight, but with a record of 5-6-4, they need to be much better if they wish to end their current Stanley Cup Playoffs drought of 14 seasons.
Sabres Waive Talented Winger Carson Meyer
On Monday however, the team made a surprising move, as they officially waived 28-year old winger Carson Meyer, who appeared in no games with the team despite being on their roster for much of the season.
Originally selected in the sixth-round of the 2017 NHL Draft, Meyer has been grinding to find his opportunity at the next level, and over the past five years he has played in 41 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, tallying 2 goals and 6 points in that time.
Despite all of the Sabres injuries and inconsistencies up front, the team simply haven’t found a spot for Meyer, and with the team likely to go to a young prospect to replace some recent absences, this was the time for them to make the move.
There’s a chance that another team out there looking for depth on the wing could look into acquiring Meyer, but given how underwhelming he’s been at the professional level thus far, the most likely outcome is that he ends up back in the AHL with the Rochester Americans.
