Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst was left red-faced after an opposition physiotherapist mocked his celebration following his goal for Ajax against Utrecht.

Weghorst thought he had given his team the lead in the final minutes of the first half after Oscar Gloukh picked him out at the far post. The striker finished the chance convincingly and celebrated by flexing his muscles in a confident display, but the celebration was short lived.

Following a VAR review for a foul by Lucas Rosa on Gijval Zechiel in the build-up, the goal was disallowed. As if the moment wasn’t embarrassing enough for the Dutch international, one of Utrecht’s physios was caught on camera mocking Weghorst, mimicking his flex after the disallowed goal.

Ajax went on to lose the match 2-1 in what was interim manager Fred Grim’s first game following the sacking of John Heitinga last week. Despite the result, the Eredivisie side held onto fourth place, trailing third-place AZ by four points and sitting eight behind Feyenoord.

Weghorst joined Ajax last summer following a two-year stint at Burnley. He has so far made 45 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals.

Before moving to the Netherlands, the striker spent time on loan at Old Trafford from Burnley in 2023. Despite showing plenty of enthusiasm and passion on the pitch, his level of performance wasn’t there to match.

Ultimately, he went on to make just 31 appearances in a Reds shirt but described his time at the club as a “dream come true”.

At the time, he shared a video compilation of his time with United and wrote: “Dear Man United fans, thanks for everything. I really enjoyed every single second at this club, from winning silverware to scoring my first goal against Betis at Old Trafford.

“Dreams came true. Unbelievably proud to wear the badge. I wish you all the best for the future. Man United fans, thank you very much.”
