Recent rain is easing the drought-caused strain on one of the lakes supplying some Halifax Water customers as the utility announces an end to mandatory conservation.
In a statement on Wednesday, Halifax Water says the precipitation has increased water levels at Lake Major by 70 cm. While that is an improvement, the utility says voluntary water use restrictions will remain in place for the time being.
“Halifax Water is cautiously optimistic that water levels are slowly recovering; however, staff continue to monitor water supply levels. The amount of precipitation that occurs over the winter months will ideally provide enough water to fully recharge lakes across the region,” the statement reads. “Until then, all customers and residents are urged to follow voluntary water conservation measures until further notice.”
The utility says it will be resuming hydrant flow testing and reopening bulk water fill stations at Lake Major on Thursday morning.
Pockwock Lake also remains under a voluntary conservation order.
